John Legere is an American business executive and entrepreneur, best known for being the former CEO of T-Mobile US. He was born on June 4, 1958, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Legere received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1980.
Legere began his career in the telecommunications industry working at New England Telephone, before moving to AT&T in 1983. He worked at AT&T for over 20 years, holding various leadership positions including Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Asia Pacific and President of AT&T Global Strategy and Business Development.
In 2012, Legere was appointed as the CEO of T-Mobile US, the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the United States. Under his leadership, T-Mobile became known for its “Un-carrier” strategy, which eliminated long-term contracts and introduced unlimited data plans. Legere also oversaw T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint in 2020, which created a new company called T-Mobile.
Legere retired as the CEO of T-Mobile in April 2020, and is currently a board member at Akamai Technologies, Inc. He is also an active philanthropist and has donated millions of dollars to various organizations, including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
